Why we're signing:
We buy Ben & Jerry’s for two reasons. The first is obvious: it’s great ice cream. The second should be equally obvious: it has always been a brand with a conscience. One that uses its voice to fight for justice when others choose silence.
Or at least it was. When Ben & Jerry’s tried to take positions that shouldn’t be controversial, like celebrating Black History Month, defending abortion rights, and calling out the dangerous rise of authoritarianism, you – Magnum’s management – silenced them. When tens of thousands of us called on Magnum to free Ben & Jerry’s, here is what you did instead.
- You tore up the rulebook to force out all Independent Directors of the Board, without having the legal authority to do so.
- Now all that’s left are two Magnum appointees. The independent board, an entity that exists to ensure Ben & Jerry’s uses its power as business for social and environmental justice, has been entirely hollowed out.
- You defunded the Ben & Jerry’s Foundation after 40 years of work, leaving grassroots charities as collateral damage.
- You flooded Ben & Jerry’s social media with safe, anodyne content, while blocking posts calling for refugee protections and First Amendment rights behind the scenes.
We are lifelong Ben & Jerry’s customers because we believe in what it stands for. We have no such loyalty to Breyers or Walls or Magnum, to Cornetto or Klondike, or to any of the other brands now sitting under the Magnum Ice Cream Company umbrella.
Free Ben & Jerry’s. Because if you won’t listen, we will start voting with our wallets.
